Workshop details

Take the chance to participate in a watercolor workshop with the world-famous Canadian watercolor artist Michail Solovyev.

During the course, you will learn to paint portraits and figures, both nude and ballerinas.

Students get an opportunity to cover the very basic rules that allow to create the illusion of motion in Michel's own simplified way: “It´s watercolor, so let it flow and blend!”

No prior knowledge of being able to draw is required.

During the course, you will receive individual support from Michael, based on your own level. Theory combines with practice.

Workshop Material

To get the most value from the course, it's important that you bring the right material och tools stated by the artist.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Paper

100% cotton 140-pound Rough (Grain Torchon) paper – Saunders or Arches, size from 11 x 15 to 15 x 22 inches, depending on your preference. If you have a favorite brand of watercolor paper, by all means, use it. Hot-pressed paper is NOT recommended.

My recommendation: Saunders Waterford Rough, 300gsm.

Brushes
  • Round paintbrush (or mop) squirrel, goat, or equivalent (approximately #12)
  • Round sharp paintbrush (or rigger, liner) (approximately #4)
  • Flat strong brush for watercolor, approximately 1 1/2 inch width (3.5 cm) or bigger.

If you have a favorite brush set, feel free to use it. Asian calligraphy brushes are very welcome (e.g., goat, rat). In case you prefer to use the same brushes as I, I recommend you check my signature set. And Escoda Michael Solovyev’s Master Set.

In addition, I will bring some of my materials, which will be available for purchase during the master class.

Paint / Palette Colors

I highly recommend Daniel Smith Watercolor in Tubes. In case of impossibility, you can use any other professional brand. We need a basic color set. Small sets for travel are NOT recommended.

It is highly recommended to have the following set (we will use it a lot):

  • Quinacridone Sienna
  • Quinacridone Deep Gold
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Perylene Violet
  • Indigo
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Phthalo Green BS
  • Phthalo Blue GS
Tools / Extras
  • Masking tape
  • Board to stretch paper on
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper towels
The Location

The address of the premises is Granängsringen 60 in Tyresö.

The premises are located opposite the bus stop for bus 802, which runs from Gullmarsplan.

Food & Coffee

I will invite you to a daily coffee (two occasions). The timings of these occasions will be discussed with the guest artist.

You buy lunch yourself. Near the premises is a pizzeria and supermarket Hemköp. It is also possible to eat your own food in the room. There is also a refrigerator and a microwave to heat the food.

It is possible to eat dinner in the Tyresö center and in other places within walking distance of both our local and the center.

Artist biography

Michael Solovyev

Canada

Michael is often called a “sunny watercolorist” – his airy, transparent artworks look as though they emit the sunlight. His traditional academic art education, extensive experience as a head theater stage designer, and oil painter career now inform his priority as a watercolor artist – light. His main belief is that sometimes even a pile of rubbish with beautiful lighting can become an artwork. Michael is a watercolor artist of great renown, with exhibitions and workshops all over the world, from Bolivia to France to Australia.

Michael sees his work as an artist as exploration and observation of the world and its presentation in such way the others can see the things he saw – one of the most interesting jobs in the world. His stage designer background as provided two main insights fundamental for his subsequent watercolor artist career – understanding that the light is paramount to the art and the love for collective co-creation.

Watercolor is the most interesting medium to Michael because it is the only material on the whole planet where he is not solely responsible for the creative process. Rather than working alone, he forms a partnership with the water. Watercolor flows, permeates the medium, it exists in time as an alive being. Michael works together with the watercolor in a fascinating process of co-creation which leads to interesting outcomes. Such partnership does not exist in all other branches of visual arts.

Michael considers adrenaline and experimentation the necessities of the creative process, always challenging himself with new techniques, ideas, stories, and materials. Willingness to experiment and create led Michael to design his own line of watercolor materials and release a series of watercolor video lessons.
