Workshop details

Take the opportunity to join a watercolor workshop with the renowned Indian artist Prafull Sawant, celebrated for his plein air landscapes that capture light to create mood and depth. Recognized as one of the world’s leading realist painters, Prafull will guide you in developing your skills in composition, focusing on space, light, and atmosphere. You will also learn how to simplify complex locations while maintaining their character and emotional impact.

The course includes outdoor demonstration painting in selected locations around Stockholm city or Tyresö, chosen by Prafull. Subjects covered in the workshop include cityscapes, landscapes of streets or lanes, night scenes, and aerial views. Throughout the workshop, Prafull will provide personalized guidance tailored to your individual level, ensuring that each participant benefits from his expertise.

Workshop Material

To get the most value from the course, it's important that you bring the right material och tools stated by the artist.

Paper

Prafull will give the demo on Arches (Cold Press/Fine grain 300gsm). Any good brand of watercolor paper, like Baohong (Cold Press Fine Grain 300gsm), Waterford (rough), Strathmore, Hanemule, Lana papers (Cold Press/Rough Grain 300 or 400gsm). Size: 37 x 27 cm or 37 x 55 cm (any one size must be), or as you like, size papers, and Few Cold Press (Fine Grain), and for Watercolor Painting – a total of 6 to 8 papers. 

Please bring any brand of watercolor, small size 19 x 27 cm paper, to show personalized correction from me.

Drawing paper
Normal drawing paper 120 / 150gsm for sketching – 37 x 27 cm or smaller (A4, like Xerox Paper) – 15 to 20 sheets.

Brushes

I will use my signature series Chinese Watercolor Brushes (Goat Hair Natural Brushes – 6 brushes set) and Squirrel's Hair Wash Brushes, Round Sable or squirrel hair brushes no. 2, 4, and 6 to 10. Sable or squirrel hair wash brush – small (1 inch width), medium (1.5 inch width), and big (2 inch width).

If someone wants to buy my signature series Chinese Brushes and Squirrel Hair Wash Brush (1 / 1.5 / 2 inch), let Art Manu know, and I will bring some. 

Please, no synthetic brushes.

Optional: Mob Brush, Chinese Brushes if you have.

Paint / Palette Colors

Deniel Smith artist watercolor paints, Schiminke, Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors, Winsor and Newton, Van Gogh, or any good artist quality watercolor 18/24 shades tube box (9/12/14 ml any). 

Important – must be in tubes, not cakes or pans.

  • Lead Pencil – "B" or " Hb", 0.5mm. (No normal pencil, must be lead)
  • Small Chair or Easel – for on-location painting, as per your suitability (optional)
The Location

The address of the premises is Granängsringen 60 in Tyresö.

The premises are located opposite the bus stop for bus 802, which runs from Gullmarsplan.

Food & Coffee

I will invite you to a daily coffee (two occasions). The timings of these occasions will be discussed with the guest artist.

You buy lunch yourself. Near the premises is a pizzeria and supermarket Hemköp. It is also possible to eat your own food in the room. There is also a refrigerator and a microwave to heat the food. 

It is possible to eat dinner in the Tyresö center and in other places within walking distance of both our local and the center.

Artist biography

Prafull B. Sawant

India

Born in 1979 in Nasik, India. He has long been recognized as one of the foremost realistic artists in the world. He is best known for his plein air atmospheric landscapes that capture light to create mood and depth within the scene. He is highly sought after internationally for his demonstrations, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. He is frequently invited to conduct plein air workshops, serve as a juror for international competitions, and participate in prestigious invitational exhibitions and events such as 3ème Festival International de peinture de plein air sur grand format in Paris, France (2019, 2020), Moscow International Watercolor Festival in Russia (2017), 10th Festival International De L'Aquarelle in Aiguillon, France (2017), Artlife Fest in Moscow, Russia (2018, 2019), 5th Lushan International Watercolor Festival in China (2014), Qingdao Art Museum in China (2014), Festival De International Aquarela in Peru (2019), Fabriano In Aquarello in Italy (2016, 2018, 2019), and many more.

He has held solo exhibitions in China at the Shanghai Quanhua Watercolor Art Gallery in Shanghai and the Xufeng Art Museum in Qingdao City. To date, he has presented 15 solo exhibitions and more than 70 international exhibitions by invitation. He has won 45 awards and scholarships at the national and state levels, as well as 42 international awards for his watercolor, oil, and acrylic paintings.

In 2015, he became the first and only artist from India to win the 148th International Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society award, held in New York. Other awards include:

  • Northwest Watercolor Society’s 72nd International Exhibition, Washington, USA (2012)
  • 34th International Watercolor Art Society Exhibition, Houston, USA (2011)

  • Fabriano In Acquarello Maxi Paint Performance Award, Italy (2016)

His works have been featured in leading international watercolor magazines and books. Articles about him include a feature in Watercolor Artist magazine (USA) with his work on the cover and a ten-page special article (Feb 2013), Southwest Art Magazine (USA), The Art of Watercolour and L’Art de l’Aquarelle (France, 2012 & 2019), Splash 12, 13, 14 (USA), International Artist (Australia), Masters of Watercolors – East to West (St. Petersburg, Russia), and Artlife magazine (Moscow, 2018, 2019), among many others.

He has traveled to more than 21 countries for invitational exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures, and workshops, often spending more than seven months a year outside India for these engagements.

He is the Brand Ambassador of Daniel Smith Artist Materials (USA). In October 2019, Daniel Smith launched a Master Artist Watercolor Set under his name: “Daniel Smith Prafull Sawant Master Artist Watercolor Set.” He is the first and only artist from India to receive this honor.

He is also the only Indian artist invited as an Honorary Member of the International Masters of Watercolor Alliance (IMWA), registered in Sweden.

His works are highly sought after by private collectors, art museums, and galleries worldwide.
